Pulitzer Prize Winner Carol Guzy to Receive ArtsQuest Foundation’s Pinnacle of the Arts Award Nov. 14

David Yanoshik and Just Born Also Honored with 2019 Linny Awards

The ArtsQuest Foundation is honored to announce that four-time Pulitzer Prize winner Carol Guzy will receive the Foundation’s prestigious Pinnacle of the Arts Award at the fourth Linny Awards ceremony Nov. 14, 6 p.m., at the ArtsQuest Center’s Musikfest Café at SteelStacks. The Pinnacle of the Arts Award is presented to an individual who has lived or currently resides in the Lehigh Valley and has achieved national or international distinction in the visual, literary or performing arts.

Born in Bethlehem, Guzy graduated from Liberty High School and then studied at Northampton County Community College, graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Registered Nursing before a change of heart led her to the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in Florida to study photography. She began her photojournalism career at The Miami Herald, and later worked at The Washington Post.

Guzy has spent years documenting everything from natural disasters to political turmoil, with a focus on the hope and compassion that exists during times of crisis. She earned her first Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography in 1986 for her pictures of the devastating mudslide in Armero, Colombia. She was recognized again in 1995 for Spot News Photography for her coverage of the military intervention in Haiti, and in 2000 she received a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography for her work in Kosovo.

Guzy won her fourth Pulitzer, for Breaking News Photography, in 2011 for coverage of the Haitian earthquake in 2010, and she is the only journalist to receive four Pulitzer Prizes. She has also been named Photographer of the Year for the National Press Photographers Association three times and eight times for the White House News Photographers Association.

About the Linny Awards

Named after the late Marlene ‘Linny’ Fowler, a stained glass artist and community leader who supported artists and arts organizations throughout the Lehigh Valley for more than a quarter century, the Linny Awards are designed to recognize and celebrate the region’s flourishing arts community. In addition to the Pinnacle of the Arts, Business Supporter of the Arts and the Lifetime volunteerism award, the Foundation will present several other awards Nov. 14 including Visual Artist of the Year, Performing Artist of the Year, Emerging Artist of the Year, Arts Educator of the Year and Student Artist Scholarship Award.

Proceeds from the Linny Awards go to support the Foundation, which Fowler helped found in 2003. The Foundation is focused on supporting and strengthening the long-term sustainability of ArtsQuest, the nonprofit that presents Musikfest and 4,000 other programs, events and educational classes annually for the region, 40 percent of which are free to attend.
